X-men : Days of Future Past
As Simon Kinberg has been at work scripting a sequel to X-Men: First Class for producer Bryan Singer and returning director Matthew Vaughn, speculation has run rampant that the film would feature the ‘Days of Future Past’ storyline, which originally appeared in the pages of Uncanny X-Men in 1981. Domain name registrations and other hints have pointed towards the inclusion of the plotline that features an alternate future and loads of dead fan-favorite characters.
Now Singer confirms that the film bears that title, and suggests that we might even see some characters from the first X-Men film series show up.
Asked about the First Class sequel, Bryan Singer told IGN,
Bryan Singer: I can say it’s being written right now and it will start shooting in a few months. It’s going to be very ambitious. It’s called Days of Future Past and it deals with aspects of that comic but also some very new things. I just don’t want to give any of it away. Matthew Vaughn will be directing and I’m totally excited about it.
That’s good, but this is better:
I think there’s a strong desire to broaden out the universe. The X-Men universe on its own is every bit as big as the Marvel universe and I think it’s time to reach out and explore it and perhaps even bring some connectivity between the films, as Marvel’s done so well. You may see some of that, I don’t know. [Laughs]
That ‘connectivity’ could be really interesting to see, especially as fans have tried to work out just how First Class fits into (or doesn’t fit into) the existing X-Men movie timeline. The alternate future angle of Days of Future Past could help bring those disparate narrative lines together, which is exactly what some have been hoping for.
Don’t know the storyline in question? Here’s a bit about Days of Future Past as it ran in comics form:
The storyline alternates between present day, in which the X-Men fight Mystique’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and a future timeline caused by the X-Men’s failure to prevent the Brotherhood from assassinating Senator Robert Kelly. In this future universe, Sentinels rule the United States, and mutants live in internment camps. The present-day X-Men are forewarned of the possible future by a future version of their teammate Kitty Pryde, whose mind traveled back in time and possessed her younger self to warn the X-Men.
